Hey GGers! reality Show Based on Gossip Girl. Last night, I believe, a new reality show aired on Bravo called NYC Prep, which is said to be based on our favorite teen drama…According to USA Today, it ’shines a spotlight on real teens living overpriced lives in glittery Manhattan.’ Sounds interesting!
In fact, USA Today gives us the lowdown on the differences between the two shows:
‘Gossip Girl’
Haves & have-nots: At a fictional prep school, trust-funders and young socialites go head-to-head in vicious games against poorer students hailing from Brooklyn.
Requisite womanizer: The smooth-talking Chuck Bass (played by Ed Westwick) hits the sheets with a new girl in practically every episode, but his heart belongs to Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester). Schemes and sultry stares are half his battle.
Obscene wealth: “Rats go underground. Not Waldorfs!” Blair Waldorf says, eschewing the subway for her town-car lifestyle on the last season of Gossip Girl.
Social pressure:Gossip Girl’s allowance-challenged Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen) steals a pricey dress from her mentor’s closet for a big night out.
Sex: Abstinence need not apply. One only need look to Gossip Girl’s “OMFG”-themed 2008 ad campaigns to see why tangled sheets are a series staple.
Designer duds: The cast members get their uptown glam on with designers such as Alice + Olivia, Nanette Lepore, Jay Godfrey and Herve Leger.
Tech must-haves: Characters routinely get mass text messages from the omnipresent Gossip Girl, who haunts their every move.
Angst: Money-laundering, cougars, college pressure and blackmail are staples of Gossip Girl, which begins Season 4 on Sept. 14 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CW.
‘NYC Prep’
Haves & have-nots Real prep-school kids are pitted against public-schoolers in a social-climbing world stocked with chauffeured SUVs and exclusive parties.
Requisite womanizer: New York is 16-year-old Sebastian Oppenheim’s oyster. “I hook up a lot … with two to three girls in a night, maybe more,” the French-speaking teen says. His signature move? Flipping his blond, surferlike locks.
Obscene wealth: “The thing about New York is, money flows like the wind. … I feel bad for people that can’t have that,” says male fashion plate Peter “PC” Peterson, 18, whose recession-era perspective is decidedly un-PC.
Social pressure: “It’s kind of hard to keep up,” admits Taylor DiGiovanni, 15, a public school student on the show. Taylor throws a party (sans parents) at a swanky restaurant to keep appearances up.
Sex: Enter the new trend of “sexting.” “Sex is a big deal on the prep-school scene. … There are, like, naked pictures floating around of girls you have had sex with,” Sebastian says.
Designer duds: Look for Kooba bags, stops at Barneys New York, and the pressure to look perfect. “I wear clothes that are less than $20 sometimes,” a teen on the show claims. “Yeah, but that’s because you’re so downtown,” pans prepster Jessie Leavitt, 17.
Tech must-haves: These teens are crazy for BlackBerry Messenger chatting and say Facebook groups follow their every move.
Angst: While the tribulations of these teens aren’t likely to land them in jail, the slippery social ladder, Harvard applications and boyfriend-scouting mean there’s no shortage of drama.
