Why the Jenny and Vanessa haters?

Hey people!
Okay, full disclosure: Jenny Humphrey is not my favorite character (Serena is 
) but I love her as much as I love any of the others (which the obvious exception of Chace ). I’ve noticed though, through feedback and random comments that there ARE a lot of Jenny haters out there. Comments such as (and I’m copy-pasting this,mind you. Though, I’m not putting up usernames) “ew i cnnt stand that little ho j” and “jenny should be off. shes such a conniving bitch” are not unherad (or in this case, unseen) of.
Evidently, viewers’ hate for Vanessa surpasses their hate for Jenny (another thing which I might add, I don’t fully understand…how can you possibly “hate” a TV character? Okay, so it’s possible but Vanessa’s not murdered anyone in the past few episodes as far as I know) but it’s still existant.
Also another character I would like to adress : Vanessa.
C’mon. I mean, admitted she’s no Serena Van Der Woodsen or Blair Waldorf and isn’t as interesting as them, but it’s a bit far-fetched and immature to say you HATE her.
These are some random comments I found scattered around (and trust me, there were a LOT to choose from. I use the words “a lot” loosely here in case Jessica Szhor happens to be reading this ):
“UGH i totes hate vanessa! shes the worst character and a big slut. she should be off the show”.
” Vanessa is so ewwwwwwwwwwww.”
“I hate V!!! SHES SUCH AN ASS!”
Um. Okay? Firstly, like I said for J, she’s not my favorite character but I have no undying hatred for her either. Secondly, I find people hating her for the whole Chuck-and-Vanessa’s-own-little-orgy thing. DUDE. Blair busy with Nate. What’s Vanessa supposed to do? As adorable as Nate is (and as much as I worship him), he can seem to be an innocent man whore at several points of time. He’s basically been around. Serena, Blair, Jenny, Vanessa. The only people left are maybe Lily or Eleanor (CW writers! I’m not serious! Please, none of that!). So V’s allowed to be mad and want her own form of revenge.
If you don’t like them together, simply state it in a non-heated, slightly classier way.
And now to Jenny. People didn’t like her mostly during her time as wannabe queen Bee. WTF? Are you blaming her for wanting to be part of a group in High School? C’mon. I’m sure tons of the people who wrote those comments are financially weak or whatever. What if one of you had to be in her position?
I want to know, what makes them such easy targets? Vanessa especially?
And please don’t waste my time by typing out barely legible, dim-witted comments like “VANESSA SUX. SHE SHOULDN B ON D SHOWW” or ” j is so ewwww. i dnt wnt her on gg!!! go awayyyyy.” (again I’m copy-pasting).

i SOOO agree with all of this, it irritates me when i see people commenting on how much they hate jenny and Vanessa
I actually like Jenny! Ive always liked her! and i definitely thought she was most interesting when she was going through her ‘bad ass’ phase…i think she’s had one of the more compelling and realistic storylines in GG history and i hope she has more to do next season…plus…i loved jenny and nate…a lot more than i liked vanessa and nate…and i was disappointed when he picked V instead of J.
Vanessa’s character is the most realistic on the show..she not my fave either…but i agree with u when u say…how can people hate a tv character? lol…i dont get it…

Thank you for this post. I only recently been on this site but I quickly noticed all the ridiculous comments about Jenny and Vanessa. Hopefully people will stop making ridiculous and unnecessary comments, there really is no need. And while Jenny and Vanessa are definitely not my favorite characters they still have their own redeeming characteristics. Pus they are just television characters, nothing to get overly worked up about.
Personally I can’t see how you could love a TV character, especially shallow Serena, just as much as how you could hate a TV character.
Basically on TV and stuff people convert sexual desire, admiration and envy into LOVE and annoyance, irritation or greater jealousy into HATE.
And why are you sitting here justifying the actions of a make believe person you don’t even like?

its not like she hasn’t done anything the rest of the girls do – pretty much they have all kissed (or more) the same boys… and same with boys like Nate, for example who has had relations with Serena, Blaire, Jenny AND Vanessa. so vanessa isn’t that bad!

I think the point about hating Vanessa is that she reminds everyone watching the show that even though it’s all glamour and riches, there is still a real world out there.
Dan does that too but he’s going out with Serena and tries to fit in the Upper East Side World, so he doesn’t really count.
I mean, why do most of you watch GG? Because it’s so like your own life?
Vanessa, in all her normalcy, might be though.
And that’s why (in my opinion) people ‘hate’ her. She’s too normal for a show full of scandal and gossip.
And that is too why I loved the Chuck and Vanessa moment.
On one side, it spoiled her, ‘normal’ side but on the other it showed that with an influence like the Upper East Side you can’t stay normal for long. Eventually you have to give in.
Well, that’s what I think about Vanessa. Jenny, I have not a clue. She’s not that interesting, I admit… But she’s okay. Her story-lines are not what you’d call boring right?

I agree with Oracle about Vanessa – she’s too real for the UES-favouring viewers, but I have an opinion about Jenny.
I think people hate her because she’s like that girl we all know that we hate. Everyone has that ‘friend’ who tries too hard, wants to be what she’s not, and betrays everyone to get there. She’s the wannabe queen bee and no one likes a girl like that. And I think this hatred is solidified by the fact that Taylor Momsen tends to come off exactly like that in her interviews and red carpet appearances, what with dressing much older than herself and all.
And, A, don’t lie, I’ve heard you say ‘OH MY GOD, JENNY IS SUCH A BITCH’ way too many times to believe you don’t hate her.
I don’t like Vanessa but I love Jenny! I don’t get why people hate Jenny. You say you don’t like her cause she’s a bitch, Hello?? Blair is a bitch too and everybody likes her!!! (including me =)
Vanessa’s not real, that’s just rubbish. She is certainly not realistic in her character progression. I think the reason that everyone hates Vanessa is that she really doesn’t have a character: she’s just basically one big plot device. . There are time when she’s the pillar of moral justice, and then suddenly is a bitch, and then back to being a virgin saint. That’s why as a character she is disliked.
I think Jenny is disliked for a similar reason: she’s constantly oscillating from one extreme to the other: ‘good-girl’ to ’satanic wild-child’. But mainly people hate Jenny because she’s a crazy, whiney, madwoman. Her character has no motivation or depth. That is the difference between Blair and Jenny. Blair’s character is filled out and given complexity throughout the series. The only thing Jenny’s character is given is bad hair and raccoon make-up.
At one stage Dan is trying to tell her that her boyfriend is cheating on her with another man, and she actually says:
“Oh my god, Dan, can’t you just let me be happy for once?”
And here we come to the main point of hatred: Jenny is so constantly whining about her horrible upper-middle-class life. The majority of the viewers as part of the middle socio-economic bracket find her complaint about not being able to buy Dolce and Gabana bags or go to restaurants for lunch every day painful.
I personally detest both character for the above reasons. But would never leave comments saying: omfg, lyk vanessa is a ho and jenny is a lezzo skank. Because that’s just stupid.
I love Vanessa! And i know that i am not the only one!i thing people are jealous..or hate her because are C&B funs or D&S funs! But she is great,i love her when she is with Nate.And Nate is a good person when he is with Her!She always helps S,D and N. And at

Trillian, I do not hate Jenny. I never said Jenny’s a bitch. I said BLAIR’S a bitch. But I still love her. That’s the thing. Blair’s allowed to be bitchy and annoying BECAUSE she’s rich and Jenny’s not because what? She’s not? Jenny and Blair, where the Queen Bee position is concerned, are neck to neck except for an age gap and bank balance difference.
I love Blair, but I can’t understand why people would hate Jenny for trying to fit in. I doubt all of you are uber rich. And even if you are, have a heart.

What is the name of the actress who plays Jenny? I think, it’s painful to watch because she just can’t act…it just looks fake and annoying. And about Vanessa? I don’t understand her role in the show…Vanessa is not evolving, nothing…just dull and also played by a bad actress. Both of them not necessary at all….I’d prefer to see Georgina more often.

Jenny I always liked, because I can relate to her wanting to fit in and then wanting to rebel, and be different to everyone else. She is with people all the time who have money and naturally she is going to feel inadequate at some point. I LOVED her fashion designer storyline, and I could relate to how she felt, with just wanting to escape and do her own thing, weren’t we all 15 once?
After all, she is surrounded by friends who are two years older, wanting to still fit in with them, and she is full of hormones and making mistakes common of her age.
When I was 15 I made the world of mistakes, and I still do now, so I don’t see why that shouldn’t be portrayed on television.

I have to say that I don’t AT ALL hate Jenny. She’s a great character. I mean I don’t love her half as much as I do Blair and Serena, but I personally think she’s likable.
However I can’t really relate to her, seeing as I come from quite a wealthy background like B & S, and I’ve always had the same friends and boyfriend like the NJBC since I was 11 so I’ve never really had to “fit in” but I can see where she’s coming from and I’m sure lots of people out there can relate to her!
Vanessa on the other hand.. Well I DON’T hate her. There’s nothing about her which I can say I hate, and well you’re right she’s a TV character.
Personally I can’t blame her for the CV thing, I mean I was angry at the writers for doing it, I could just about handle BN with out a little CV in there too, but her character wasn’t at fault there. Nate had hurt her and wasn’t even sorry for it and she needed someone and Chuck was there and just as much hurt as her.
The thing that annoyed me the most about her is the fact that she became so different to the down-to-earth girl she started off as being. She then became like Blair – the personality she used to hate – and was blackmailing, and conspiring and just like everyone else. And that major character change killed her personality for me.
Also I like Jate so I hated the fact she stole N’s letter to J and became sulky about their relationship which basically ruined them and that made me like her a little less too.
I wouldn’t however want either one of the characters off the show. They’re both interesting, have fans and create lots of very much need drama and GOSSIP =D
I also love Jessica, she’s AMAZING!! And I’m sure Taylor’s nice as well

i like ALL the characters you get where they are comming from youknow we all have characters we can identify with more (blair)but seriously why all this hate towards jenny and V i dont get it i agree with you by the way the only thing i personally have a problem with in this series would be serenas formal dresses like at the wedding and debutant ball sooooo tacky sorry but im pretty sure that when i go to my debutant ball and my debs my dress is going to be classicly sophistcated not compleatly tacky no offence

i don’t really like vanessa’s character mostly because she acts like she’s so much better than the upper east side rich people, but she’s really just like them. she schemes and sleeps around and blackmails and does all the same stuff as them, but she doesnt get as much attention for it because she’s not in the spotlight as much.
also (off topic), i feel like there’s a possibility that she’s gossip girl. i noticed in the last episode she and dan left the party at blair’s house after graduation. that means she was the only person not in the room when serena sent out that text. possible??

But I hate Vanessa. xD Because she gets in between EVERYONE’S frickin’ relationship. I mean, first she almost broke up Serena and Dan. THEN she got in between Chuck and Blair (WHICH IS UNFORGIVABLE), and THENNN she got in between Nate and Jenny (MOAR UNFORGIVABLE).
So that’s why I hate her. >>;
Vanessa always comes off as rather self riteous, without having any motivation to do so. Also, she’s rather vague as a character – we know nothing about her family, her background, or her home, but she seems to just show up in all of the other character’s lives.
Jenny went downhill for me during her whole “I’m a rebel fashion designer with racoon makeup, you can’t possibly understand me” phase. I have to say though, she completely redeemed herself in the last episode when she took the crown. It was great, to see her take over Blair’s position.
Speaking of which, I don’t think either Vanessa or Jenny stack up to the other characters, who are far more complex and likable.

i actually like all of the characters, they all have a unique personality. even though…i sometimes get bored or annoyed by a few like serena and jenny i still love all of them! people seriously need to cut jenny/taylor and vanessa/jessica some slack. they’re great characters and actors.

Personally I don’t think that any of the characters on Gossip Girl are particularly good. But I definitely think that Blair and Serena are more realistic in their development than Jenny and Vanessa are.
Vanessafun, I’m not sure that you can just abuse me for having an opinion which, (unlike yours) was justified with an explanation (in words not smilies). You also have to face the fact that Gossip Girl is a teen drama, and the acting isn’t great. As a third year uni student studying drama, I can tell you that there’s more to acting than being able to make out with many different men.

Again, look at my post, Blair’s personality is justified and filled out. This means that the audience can EMPATHISE with her to some extent. They also probably admire her, which is a little sad because she’s fictional. It’s not Jenny trying to fit in that people find frustrating: it’s the way she does it. The way she continuously voices these mega-angsty speeches about how hard her life is probably don’t sit well with an audience with less privileges than she does.
Also “vehemently insulting a character who hasn’t done anything wrong is just that, WRONG”.

I thing season 3 will be intersting for V.As a character she do not thing she is better than the others.And she do mistakes like the other characters.Of course V on the books is better,but is not jessica’s mistake,it is writters mistake!Vanessa is always around and they do not let her personality to grow,like they do for B and S.I will wate season 3.I only wont heaters to be more kinder. please,for funs this is rude.PS.sorry for my English
