Okay everyone, time to take it on the other side! Seems to me like the boys are back in town and ready to mess around, don’t you think? I mean Dan…COME ON!!! Is that lonely boy’s idea of wisdom? Even Eric got his hands dirty!

All the drama in the last aired episode was right on time to answer some question I had been asked several times about the show: is Gossip Girl a girly series? I was beginning to think it definitely was with the past episodes focused on the Blair-Serena conflictual issues, whose bitchy behavior reached its climax with the already cult “push in the cake” scene.

That scene, I daresay, took us back to the early first season and its blows below the belt; but it was also the end, as far as the third season is concerned, of the girls’ monopoly on evil scheming and manipulation, all in one single episode: Serena was driven by an exhausted desperation, the call-girl had fooled no one but Blair (isn”t it ironic, Blair being the one you cannot seem to fool..) and Mrs Tripp Van der Bilt’s schemes caused collateral damages, Nate’s sacrifice. Even Queen Jenny finally properly established herself as Constance Ruler -and NY royalty, putting the gossip about her possible irrelevance to an end.

And when you get to think about it, Jenny managed to be the center of attention, she even played it avant-gardist, “learning from the best”, setting the tone for mischief and tricks around her perfect plan for a perfect date. Blair and Serena, stupidly stuck in an elevator seemed like amateurs.

The women-to be need not worry: since “the Grandfather: part II”, the men-to be decided to relieve them, in their own special way. And this is where the fun begins: who said anything about being mature? Confronted to the same issues as the girls, they simply saw no big deal in acting like kids, pretending to be any true hero of their childhood for more than just a prohibition party…

So, is Gossip Girl still a girlish series once the guys take the drama in their own hands, once Dan plays it cool and party boy, Nate the prince charming to the rescue, Chuck the man with the “geek” plan (sabotaging an elevator?!) and Eric the devil’s advocate? I don’t think so..

ggg

I mean, sure we can argue by saying that if the guys took control of the drama it was only because they had to, and somehow, it’s true: they all had good reasons to act the way they did; but when you get to think about it, so did the gals. Or so did think the gals…We all know that you can always manage to find yourself a good reason to justify your behavior. The thing is, we too cannot be fooled: we saw clearly that behind the explanations, each boy enjoyed himself a lot, and did not deny his pleasure at all. The professional ones, that is Chuck and Nate, know that you have to enjoy the part as long as it lasts, nor more, nor less, before you move over to the next mission. But what about the two novices who miscalculated the consequences of their games? For them the excitement may risk tasting acrid.

We have been proved that in this series male characters love the disguise of a fun part, whatever mean or righteous it might be. After all, it cannot be as boring and pale as their true self…

We’re almost mid-season..it’s time the wind shifted.
